What becomes of your life and ambitions when your path is surprisingly and radically altered—when you become separated from the people and places you love?

2020 has dramatically affected our lives, making everyone around the globe familiar with the concept of border restrictions and the need to adapt. For millions of people, travel restrictions are not a novel experience, they have been experiencing them personally for decades and over generations. Due to the nature in which our society treats and views people seeking peace from conflict, both past and present, people continue to live their lives with limitations. Words like refugee and migrant are commonplace but the people underneath those labels are often misunderstood and oversimplified in the minds of others.

What is the Hair Lock?

Nathalie Kardjian is an Armenian-Syrian artist who preserves her connection to home through a symbolic traveling lock of her hair. In the process of finding her footing in a new world, she follows the parallel yet alternate experiences of her closest relationships and discovers the resilience and strength needed for people facing hardship and adversity to move forward.

Nathalie’s hair lock travels where she cannot go, acting as a facilitator for conversations with her loved ones and surfacing the stories and experiences of those affected by a mixture of life’s unpredictability and history’s repetition.
